ASU’s fall fee increase capped at 9.9%

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State University’s tuition and fees for 2011-12 will increase no more than 9.9 percent, or $331.05, for a full-time student taking 15 hours of courses, a cap set by the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents on Thursday.

The actual tuition and fees for ASU, a TTUS member, will be set within that limit after the Texas Legislature completes the state budget, which is due in May. ASU is facing cuts of up to $12 million during the two-year budget cycle as the Legislature tries to close a shortfall estimated at as much as $27 billion.

“For tuition and fees, it cannot be any higher, but certainly it can be lower” than an increase of 9.9 percent, ASU President Joseph C. Rallo said Friday.

At the maximum increase under the cap, ASU’s projected tuition and fees would total $3,674.55 for 15 semester credit hours, which is in the midrange of costs at the state’s 35 four-year public universities.

“We’re always very conscious about the affordability and access for students,” Rallo said.
