Water savings add up at MSU residence halls

It started with 150 water-saving kits.

Over several months, two residence halls at Missouri State University saved more than 323,000 gallons of water — enough to fill half of an Olympic-size swimming pool.

“Well, at such a large institution, making tiny changes has a large impact,” said Erin Murray, a biology student at MSU who wants the water-saving kits to be installed at all the school’s residence halls.

“When you have so many shower heads, that’s a big deal,” she said.

Working with the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks, Murray helped bring the 150 water-saving kits to Sunvilla Tower and Scholars House last summer.

Each kit costs $7.99 and has a low-flow shower head, low-flow aerator, a five-minute timer, a dye tablet to detect toilet tank leaks and Teflon tape, said Mike Kromrey, education outreach coordinator for the Watershed Committee.
