The USPS wants their supplies back and fast; pallets, mail tubs, equipment

The United States Postal Inspection Service has become more aggressive in their quest to find and return Postal Service materials back to the USPS. These pieces, collectively known as Mail Transport Equipment (MTE) have grown to cost the Postal Service nearly $50 million per year in replacement expenses. Criminal prosecution for theft or misuse of postal property, is a federal crime that carries a penalty of up to 3 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $250,000.

Pallets cost up to $20 each, plastic/paper letter trays up to $2.75 per tray and those “PROPERTY OF UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE” tubs cost around $4 each, losses add up quickly. If you are aware of the misuse of postal equipment, please contact the Postal Inspection Service or the transport equipment hotline.

The amnesty period to return MTE, is November 12-26, 2011. Anyone possessing Postal Service MTE is strongly encouraged to return it during this window; no questions asked.

How far does your $.44 stamp go?

Many of today’s United States Postal Service critics may not realize how much effort goes into mailing a simple letter bearing $.44 worth of postage. The United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General recently detailed in an article on their blog, “Pushing The Envelope,” just how much time and effort goes into sending one-piece of mail.

The blog post also includes a poll for voters to comment on the price in which they would be willing to pay, or think their mailing efforts are “worth.” The blog post simplifies the processes, but also highlights the complexities of mailing, something many may take for granted.

Some College Campus Post Offices Set For Closure

As the United States Postal Service faces budget constraints, thousands of USPS stations are scheduled for closure. Included on the list are on-campus post office stations nationwide. The outcome of these closures, would be less service to students and faculty as the possibility of traveling off-campus becomes a reality. The secondary effects may include safety concerns, travel expenses, accessibility and the timeliness related to the ability of mail and parcel collection at a time when ordering online textbooks and other tangible items are at their peak.

On the contrary, come college and university programs are seeking to simply cut costs and develop fixed line items relating to mail and mailings. The trend to outsource campus mail, campus post offices and residence hall mail delivery is on the rise nationwide. In the last few years, Arizona State University, Louisiana State University, University of North Florida, Florida A&M University and many others have accepted proposals from outside companies specializing in this unique service niche. For more information about outsourcing the mail delivery services at your college or university, contact US Postal Solutions, Inc at (866) 378-8157 or www.uspostalsolutions.com.

What Are Some Decent Paying Jobs for College Students?

As an incoming college student, there is one decision you will likely face early on that deserves some thought before you actually get started. We addressed some of the unexpected college costs a few weeks back and when combined with the big ones (tuition, rent, books, etc.), it makes sense to think about what kind of jobs are available for college students, and even more about which is better for you: a job outside your career path that earns more money, or one that gives you experience in your prospective career but pays less. Taylor F., from Sacramento, Calif., asks:

Q: I know I’ll need to work when I’m in college to help cover bills. What are some convenient and decently paying jobs for college students?

A: Experience pays.
Steve Loflin, founder and CEO, National Society of Collegiate Scholars

Getting a job is really important during college. Working with employers, I have learned many of them are asking if the student has had any work experience before getting any consideration. Work can be volunteer or for pay but you get experience that shows you can commit to a schedule and manage time. Additionally, you will build relationships that translate into recommendations when pursuing future opportunities. Consider on-campus positions for convenience; Resident Assistant or orientation leader positions will get you some money, possibly free housing, and also will get you trained in a variety of skills that are transferable. Also, ask your favorite professors if they are hiring or inquire in the department that is most aligned with your future goals. Be creative, persistent, and reap the rewards immediately and in the future.
