PO box to be mandatory for on-campus residents

Students living on campus will be required to purchase a post office box at the soon-to-be-renovated post office starting next semester at $70 per year. The regulation comes with the University’s new mail carrier, which will take over operations from the United States Postal Service.

The University will hand over operations to Ricoh USA because the USPS office on campus was one of six Baton Rouge locations recommended for closure by USPS, according to Director of University Auxiliary Services Jason Tolliver. The $70 standard box with the new provider is an increase from the $44 per year for a basic P.O. box with USPS, according to Tolliver.

Residence Hall Mail Services: UGA

Residence Hall Mail Services – Mail and packages are picked up Monday through Friday from the post office and delivered to the Residence Halls. Each Residence Hall community has its own satellite mailroom facility and personnel who process the incoming letter mail and packages in accordance to their procedures.

Campus Mail closed on Saturdays

As of May 15, 2010 Campus Mail will no longer operate on Saturdays. Residence Halls will no longer receive mail or packages on Saturdays, including packages sent overnight through the USPS. However, if a student living in the Residence Halls needs to receive an overnight package on Saturday, an alternative would be to send the package UPS (United Parcel Services). UPS does operate on Saturdays and can deliver on Saturday to the Residence Halls if requested by the sender.

LSU switches mail service

LSU is officially switching to Ricoh USA to privatize mailing services on campus starting next fall, the university decided this week.

The move will cost students more and require students living on campus to purchase mailboxes, but also should solve long-term mailing services problems on campus, said Jason Tolliver, LSU director of auxiliary services.

The expedited privatization process is the result of ongoing state budget cuts to colleges and LSU being placed on the planned list of U.S. Postal Service closures nationally amid federal budget problems, he said.

The end result should be better quality in a consolidated, one-stop shop for mailing, copying, binding and graphic design services on the bottom floor of the LSU Student Union, he said.

Campus snail mail: efficient or problematic?

Once mail reaches Western’s campus it is available to the recipient within two hours, said Judy Magnuson, Western mail processing manager, as long as everything works according to plan.

The mail services department put the mail system at Western together, said Magnuson. It fits the needs of Western, she said.

“Our mail system is a homegrown system,” Magnuson said.

“I wish that I had boxed goods waiting for me. Unfortunately, the Package Center doesn’t have it’s act together, and I don’t have any of my books for this semester, even though I ordered them weeks ago.”

“Ordered early because I KNOW that this happens every semester; bought them from Amazon; got free 2-day shipping on most of them because I’m in college; used the same address that I’ve been using for four years. Still no books” (continued here).
