Team member receives Volunteer Spotlight from Raleigh Police Department

Volunteer Spotlight: Mr. Samuel Britton
By Ms. Dawn Myers

When he first began volunteering at the RPD, one of Mr. Britton’s duties was to contact home bound community members by phone and visit them to check on their welfare. “It was a great opportunity to lift the spirits of those we visited and to let them know that we have an interest in their concerns about the area they live in,” said Mr. Britton

Mr. Britton currently spends much of his volunteer time assisting with RPD ceremonies and conducting volunteer patrols throughout the city. During these patrols, he often stops to help motorists who are having car problems, and he recalls one incident where he assisted a motorist who was experiencing a different type of trouble. One night while he was on volunteer patrol, Mr. Britton saw a woman pacing near her vehicle, which was parked alongside the highway. Thinking that perhaps the woman’s car had broken down, Mr. Britton stopped to offer his assistance, and the woman told him that she was upset about a relationship situation and had stopped because she felt that she was too distressed to drive safely. Mr. Britton spoke to the woman for a few minutes and suggested that she call someone who could help her; he told her that he would stand by in the volunteer vehicle with its emergency lights activated until someone arrived to pick her up or until she felt calm enough to drive again. About 15 minutes later, the woman thanked him for stopping to help her, and she drove away. “It keeps me focused and feeling good inside to be helping others,” said Mr. Britton. “There is no price I can put on that.”

When he’s not volunteering, Mr. Britton spends his time in a number of pursuits. He is a mail manager for various student housing properties near N.C. State University, and he also transports train conductors and engineers to different stations from Richmond, Virginia to South Carolina. As a Jehovah’s Witness, Mr. Britton says that he enjoys volunteering his time to bring the message to others, and he is also fond of playing chess.

The USPS wants their supplies back and fast; pallets, mail tubs, equipment

The United States Postal Inspection Service has become more aggressive in their quest to find and return Postal Service materials back to the USPS. These pieces, collectively known as Mail Transport Equipment (MTE) have grown to cost the Postal Service nearly $50 million per year in replacement expenses. Criminal prosecution for theft or misuse of postal property, is a federal crime that carries a penalty of up to 3 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $250,000.

Pallets cost up to $20 each, plastic/paper letter trays up to $2.75 per tray and those “PROPERTY OF UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE” tubs cost around $4 each, losses add up quickly. If you are aware of the misuse of postal equipment, please contact the Postal Inspection Service or the transport equipment hotline.

The amnesty period to return MTE, is November 12-26, 2011. Anyone possessing Postal Service MTE is strongly encouraged to return it during this window; no questions asked.
