How far does your $.44 stamp go?

Many of today’s United States Postal Service critics may not realize how much effort goes into mailing a simple letter bearing $.44 worth of postage. The United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General recently detailed in an article on their blog, “Pushing The Envelope,” just how much time and effort goes into sending one-piece of mail.

The blog post also includes a poll for voters to comment on the price in which they would be willing to pay, or think their mailing efforts are “worth.” The blog post simplifies the processes, but also highlights the complexities of mailing, something many may take for granted.

Better Business Bureau Warns: College Kids At Risk of ‘Friendly Fraud’

Identity Theft by Roommates and Friends Is A Growing Trend

According to the 2010 Identity Fraud Survey Report released by Javelin Strategy and Research, more than 11 million people became victims of identity theft in 2009.

Young adults, ages 18 to 24, take 132 days on average to detect identity theft. Subsequently, the average cost of victims in this age group was $1,156, which is roughly five times more than the average amount lost by other age groups.

The BBB has 10 tips for how college kids can safely handle financial decision-making.

“1. Secure your mail. Dorm mailboxes are not always secure so you should have sensitive mail sent to your home address or to a P.O. Box.”

Back to School for Student Housing REITs

As the academic year begins, campus housing REITs will be opening their doors to swarms of students across the country.

Companies in this sector of the REIT market provide housing for college students. As space-challenged institutions of higher education grapple with more students than available dormitory rooms, industry observers say that more student housing options is a necessity.

Campus Crest Communities Inc. (NYSE: CCG) currently has 27 properties up and running, with seven in construction, and more than 25 in the development phase. The company opened six new housing facilities this year and plans to open between six and eight next year, according to Ted Rollins, co-chairman and CEO of Campus Crest.

“I would say that the demand has been steady, and there’s been a lot of growth in this sector,” Rollins said. That demand is coming from college enrollment growth, including an increase in the number of foreign students coming to the United States to study, according to Rollins.

He said the demographics of campus populations have also changed. Younger students are staying in college longer, and older students returning to college.

“Trend analysts have said this is the highest percentage of students attending higher education institutions full-time,” Rollins said.

Campus Construction Abounds

It’s been a busy summer for campus housing REITs, and plans are in the works for more developments to open in time for the 2012 school year. In July 2011, Campus Crest announced two new housing projects at Auburn University and the University of Maine. That same month, Education Realty Trust Inc. (NYSE: EDR) announced plans to begin construction on a second campus housing development at Syracuse University.

Randy Churchey, the company’s president and chief executive officer, said the new development will be their second at the university and third in Syracuse.

American Campus Communities (NYSE: ACC) also announced the beginning of construction on several projects in July, stretching from Texas to New York to Wyoming.

Most community colleges say building dorms is good plan

In June, Dutchess Community College broke ground on a 465-bed residential hall. In Schenectady, the community college is working with a company to build a student housing complex adjacent to the campus.

At Finger Lakes Community College, a residential hall opened in 2007 and officials want to add more to meet a demand that leads to a long wait list in the fall.

Across New York, at least 15 of the state’s 30 community colleges have student housing, and the list is growing.

SUNY Adirondack in Queensbury might soon join the group. The community college has designs for a 406-bed housing facility on campus, and is now determining the cost and means to finance it.

Like other community colleges, SUNY Adirondack has seen a surge in enrollment over the last two years at the same time it faces cuts in state aid.

Student housing has allowed community colleges to raise enrollment, increase revenue, add diversity and provide a complete college experience.

Some have distinct programs that draw students from afar, but need to provide them with a place to live. Others have seen local students who wanted on-campus living with the affordable cost of a community college.

Ronald Heacock, president of SUNY Adirondack, said he’s not surprised that most of the state’s community colleges have student housing.
