No Reservations: Transforming Hotels into Housing

Creating student housing from a hotel requires a clear vision. Here’s how to make it happen.
By Michele Herrmann

When there’s an opportunity to convert a hotel into student housing, should officials pursue it?

A hotel building can be turned into a housing solution due to having similar amenities—including bedrooms, dining rooms, and bathrooms—found in traditional residence halls. It can provide an immediate solution when an institution is in dire need of quick housing due to a sudden spurt in enrollment before the school year starts.

David Adelman, CEO of Campus Apartments, a firm that develops and manages student housing, sees this problem first hand, as officials have to make decisions such as determining which classes to allocate campus housing to and changing room setups to accommodate more residents.

“It is just more people coming than they anticipated,” says Adelman. When the credit crunch hit, administrators had to shelve plans for housing renovations and work with facilities that might not be operable in time. Adelman notes that institutions could find themselves “losing housing stock.”

UNLV president plans for ‘state of fiscal collapse’

UNLV President Neal Smatresk told a somber Faculty Senate on Tuesday that the administration was planning a kind of bankruptcy to deal with its budget crunch.

Under the “financial exigency” plan, tenured professors could be fired and whole departments and programs more easily closed down.

Earlier this month, the Board of Regents said it would be premature to consider such a move until the Legislature approved a final budget by June.

Smatresk told the faculty group that the cuts for UNLV would total $47.5 million and would need to be implemented by July 2012, so a plan for financial exigency would have to be prepared.

LSU switches mail service

LSU is officially switching to Ricoh USA to privatize mailing services on campus starting next fall, the university decided this week.

The move will cost students more and require students living on campus to purchase mailboxes, but also should solve long-term mailing services problems on campus, said Jason Tolliver, LSU director of auxiliary services.

The expedited privatization process is the result of ongoing state budget cuts to colleges and LSU being placed on the planned list of U.S. Postal Service closures nationally amid federal budget problems, he said.

The end result should be better quality in a consolidated, one-stop shop for mailing, copying, binding and graphic design services on the bottom floor of the LSU Student Union, he said.
