Today is Red Nose Day. This nationally-recognized fund-raising event is taking the nation by storm. With its origin story dating back to Comic Relief in 1985, Red Nose Day is dedicated to helping end childhood poverty by way of raising money through entertainment. It has already gained huge donations through corporate sponsorships and celebrity endorsements, and the rally for funds will be capped off tonight with a special NBC beginning at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
While Red Nose Day is such a huge, fun event for a great cause, charity events don’t have to be limited to only large events. And, they don’t have to be restricted to conventional, Class-A apartment communities. In fact, student housing offers one of the greatest potentials for charitable success. Today’s Millennial and Generation Z customers are fundamentally the most socially-conscious groups in history. They have a unique perspective on the world that allows then to focus less on possessions and draw more happiness from experiences. Those experiences are a key factor that dorms, residence halls and off-campus student housing can benefit from.
One of the most important things you can do for your residents is to provide memorable experiences. To join them together for charitable giving not only provides support to your charity of choice but unifies them and creates the meaningful memories that they crave the most. This does not mean that you need to ask them to donate money. Volunteering and providing an investment in time and energy is the key component to strive for.
The first step is to find a charitable organization that you can rally your student residents behind. Next, it is important to communicate with them about the event and the plan you have created (a great tool for this is the mass messaging features in PackageLog). Finally, be sure to take a lot of pictures and create a large “sharable” presence on social media in order to spread the word about your event and its participants. The word-of-mouth this creates will do more than just benefit your residents; it will also help create an environment where the most important amenity you talk about is that your residents have a lifestyle of togetherness and memorable experiences.
